Family Media Network’s mission is to help the community strive and integrate into American culture and the business sphere by educating them about business culture and finance, empowerment on legal and health issues, and all the resources available for their complete development and empowerment and integration at home.
Family Media Network is an internet radio station that is accessible to the public online via the World Wide Web and through a downloadable app from the Minneapolis area in the form of audio streams. The internet radio station launched on January 1, 2024, and is currently located in the founder’s basement.
Family Media Network (FAMEN) aims to give a voice to immigrants, new Americans, and other ethno-racial and marginalized communities residing in the Greater Minneapolis area to have a unique sound and reconnect with their native cultures through music, the arts, and current events. While Family Media Network (FAMEN) will offer diverse programming and feature various types of spoken word and news programs as well as popular urban musical styles such as jazz, hip hop, blues, and alternative rock, the focus will be on: promoting the work of local Minneapolis artists; providing information related to the redevelopment of Greater Minneapolis as well as other news relevant to members of the local community; and featuring news, spoken word, and musical styles influenced by or associated with specific cultural ethnicities that make up Greater Minneapolis, including Jamaican, Somali, West and East African, Congolese, Filipino, Asian, and Togolese. Multilingual programming is encouraged and supported.
Family Media Network is also dedicated to social justice. Programs (music, spoken word, radio documentaries, and news) and special programs (such as those for International Women’s Day, African Liberation Month, and Pride Week) challenge racism and sexism.
Classism and ableism, as well as other forms of anti-oppression and anti-discrimination, will be an important element of Radio La Famille’s programming.
Family Media Network will aim to offer original programming from 9 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week. The programming will be hosted and produced by local Minneapolis residents as well as other producers who will come to Family Media Network from various communities throughout the Greater Minneapolis area.
In keeping with the radio’s vision of bringing community members together to creatively address issues that impact them psychologically, Family Media Network will strive to be an intergenerational social space for all station members to engage with each other and with members of their constituencies. As part of this self-appeal, Family Media Network will provide programmers with free community meeting space, the use of computers for research purposes, and will regularly host: a monthly social performance event as part of ongoing roundtable discussions on issues facing communities; and workshop opportunities for children, newcomers, high school and university students, women, seniors, and anyone who wishes to use the Internet radio vehicle to dialogue and promote awareness within their communities.
To ensure audience development, high-quality broadcasts, and to accomplish the above-mandated activities, Family Media Network is committed to ongoing volunteer recruitment and training strategies, as well as the development of a strong core staff. Family Media Network staff will strive to: facilitate mentorship opportunities between and among programmers; assist programmers in the branding and promotion of their programs; train programmers in the use of social media tools; conduct media literacy workshops; and provide regular consultations and ongoing technical production workshops.
